SUMA: your local taxes (IBI, road tax, rubbish)
In Alicante province, local taxes are collected by SUMA on behalf of town halls: IBI (property tax), the vehicle tax (IVTM), and in many municipalities the rubbish charge. Bills arrive by post once a year with a payment window — but post goes astray, and not receiving the bill doesn't excuse late payment, so the safe move is a direct debit (domiciliación): set it up once on suma.es, at a SUMA office, or at your bank, and everything pays itself with a small discount in some cases. You can check what's outstanding on suma.es with a digital certificate or by visiting an office with your NIE. When you buy a property or car mid-year, check whose name the year's bill is in — the January owner pays.
