Finding the duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia)

Pharmacies here rotate out-of-hours cover: each night and Sunday one farmacia de guardia in the area stays available. Every pharmacy is required to display the current rota on its door — walk to your nearest one and the poster tells you which is on duty tonight and where. The rota also appears in local papers and on the Colegio de Farmacéuticos de Alicante website. At night some duty pharmacies serve through a hatch and may only dispense urgent items or prescriptions. For advice on minor ailments, Spanish pharmacists are well trained and can often help without a doctor's visit — many in the expat areas speak English. If a medicine needs a prescription, they cannot sell it without one, however familiar it is from home.
