Driving licences: exchanging and renewing

EU licences are valid in Spain, but once resident you must renew through the DGT (traffic authority) when the licence expires (or after two years' residence for licences with long validity). UK and most non-EU licences must be exchanged — the UK has an exchange agreement, so no driving test is needed, but start the DGT process before your licence's recognised period runs out. Everything goes through the DGT (Jefatura de Tráfico in Alicante) with a cita previa (appointment), or far more easily through a gestoría (agency). You'll need a psicotécnico — a simple medical/reaction test done at authorised centres in most towns, no appointment usually needed. Renewals can often be completed entirely at the psicotécnico centre, which forwards everything to the DGT.
