Opening a Spanish bank account
For day-to-day life — utility direct debits, SUMA taxes, many landlords — you'll want a Spanish account or at least a Spanish IBAN. Non-residents can open a cuenta de no residente (non-resident account) with a passport and a certificate of non-residency (the bank can request it, for a fee, or you get it from the police); residents open a normal account with NIE/TIE and proof of address or padrón. Bring your passport regardless. Most banks charge maintenance fees unless you meet conditions like an incoming pension or salary — ask before signing. Online banks with Spanish IBANs are a popular fee-free alternative and are accepted for direct debits. Whatever you choose, set up your bills as domiciliaciones (direct debits) — it's how Spain expects recurring payments to work.
